5 days MEGALITHIC IRELAND
If you are interested in ancient megalithic monuments in Ireland this tour is for you. The history of Ireland is written in stones and the island is full of them. Some of them are absolutely unique. We will discover them with you. Let us start with Newgrange, the oldest passage tomb in the world which is more than 5200 years old and with the misterious Mace Head carved in stone before people knew metal. We will see ogham, the only writing used in Ireland before the spread of christianity in 5th century. We will discover the secrets of stone labyrinths, see large dolmens and solitary menhirs which were marking the sites of importance for Neolithic people and touch wonderful holed stones used for curing or oath making. We will admire strange decorative carvings in churches and monasteries: half naked mermaids and Sheela na Gig. We will reach holy springs and graveyards for unbaptised that are lost among the trees, see the forgotten standing stones first used by druids, then by christian monks and find stone circles dedicated to sun worship. We will also enter stone tombs on the Hills of Sligo. The itinerary also includes visiting castles, abbeys, famous Irish Round Towers and meticulously carved Celtic Crosses.
This is the tour through Ireland known from legends and myths. Some of the sites are difficult to access or absolutely off road - they are hidden in bushes, on private properties or on hills.
